FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED

At their fall meeting, the Ionia County Memorial Hospital Foundation was pleased to award $8,500 to ICMH staff members pursuing careers in healthcare. The funds are available through the ICMH Foundation Vernice & Clarence Johnson Scholarship, Charlotte & Ray Lapo Scholarship Fund, and Don and Emma Goodell Scholarship Fund, for continuing education purposes.

The first scholarship was awarded to Pam Lennemann, PTA, Athletic Trainer, at  ICMH-PROS Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine from Ionia.  Pam finished her education at Kellogg Community College as a Physical Therapy Assistant this past spring.  Pam received $1,000 from the Foundation to help her continue her education at Montcalm Community College with pre-requisite classes towards the Physical Therapist program at University of Findley.

Barbara Haskins, LPN, Ionia, was the second recipient of a Foundation Scholarship; she also received $2,000 in funds to help her pursue her dream of being a Registered Nurse.  She is enrolled at Montcalm Community College while working at ICMH.  Barb has worked at Ionia County Memorial Hospital for almost ten years.

The next recipient was Angela Keehn, Lyons, a full time Business Office staff member at Ionia County Memorial Hospital.  Angela who received a $1,500 scholarship.  She has worked at ICMH for about 6 months and is attending Davenport College.  Her plans are to attain a Masters in Business Administration by the Fall of 2008 and continue towards a Masters in Health Administration.

Michelle Heyboer, Saranac, a full-time coder in the Medical Records Department at Ionia County Memorial Hospital was awarded $1,500 to help pay for classes with National American University where she is working towards her Bachelors in Health Care Management.

An additional $2,500 was designated for staff education, specifically for Advanced Care Life Support.  These funds were provided by the Don and Emma Goodell Scholarship Fund, which was created this past spring.

To date, over $90,000 has been disseminated to hospital and community members to further their health education. The Lapo Scholarship Fund was created in October of 1973.  Ray and Charlotte Lapo of Lake Odessa made a $10,000 contribution to Ionia County Memorial Hospital for the establishment of a scholarship fund for deserving applicants to further their education in studies relating to the para-medical field for the benefit of Ionia County Memorial Hospital.  Since that original gift, the Lapo’s, (now deceased) donated an additional $ 60,000 to the scholarship fund.
