IONIA COUNTY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL BEGINS

SLEEP DIAGNOSTIC LABORATORY

Ionia County Memorial Hospital (ICMH)) announced the opening of a Sleep Diagnostic Laboratory available at the hospital that will help patients suffering from obstructive sleep apnea identify the underlying cause of their affliction.

“The new Sleep Diagnostic Laboratory at Ionia County Memorial Hospital fills the increasing demand by patients and their doctors for local testing,” said Bob Neal, Cardio-Respiratory  Manager at ICMH.  “Now more than ever, people are aware of how important sleep is to their physical and mental well-being.  They’re looking for answers as to why they’re so tired, and we are pleased that ICMH now has an excellent service to accommodate them.”

At least 40 million Americans suffer from sleep disorders, and yet more than 60 percent of adults have never been asked about the quality of their sleep by a physician and fewer than 20 percent ever initiated a discussion, according to the National Sleep Foundation (NSF).  Surveys conducted by the NSF reveal that 60 percent of adults report having sleep problems a few nights a week or more.  In addition, more than 40 percent of adults experience daytime sleepiness severe enough to interfere with their daily activities at least a few days each month—with 20 percent reporting problem sleepiness a few days a week or more.

“Most patients think they’re sleeping well but they’re still tired during the day and don’t feel refreshed when they wake up in the morning,” said Bob Wolf, Director of Hospital Sleep Services who is partnering with ICMH in providing the new service at the hospital.  “That’s because they’re not breathing properly during their sleep, a condition known as sleep apnea, which is associated with high risk of cardiovascular disease, neurological dysfunction and an extremely high incidence of accidents, including motor vehicle accidents.”

At the ICMH Sleep Diagnostic Laboratory, two private rooms for overnight stay will allow technicians to monitor the activity of the brain, the heart, the muscle movements of the legs and measuring of air flow, effort of thorax and abdomen while trying to breathe, and oxygen saturation.  The patients are studied all night to make sure there are no problems.

For an appointment at the ICMH Sleep Diagnostic Laboratory, please call the ICMH Cardio-Respiratory Department at (616) 527-4200, ext. 255.  A referral from a physician is required.
